Some new features of the morphology of hair, visible in high-resolution electron photomicrographs, are reported: Although low-resolution photomicrographs of hair exhibit the para-cortex structure of wool, high resolution photomicrographs demonstrate orthocortex structure. The term meta-cortex is proposed for the structure of human hair. Electron photomicrographs of cross sections of hair indicate that the matrix, in which the microfibrils are embedded, has a cloud-like structure ranging between 500 and 2,500 Å. The presence of protofibrils, discovered by Rogers, has been confirmed in human hair. An attempt is made to interpret the chemical composition of the structural features revealed by the electron photomicrographs.
